KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s hopes of winning their first ever gold in table tennis at the Commonwealth Games fizzled out in the final yesterday.
Javen Choong-Karen Lyne Dick went down to India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta- Sreeja Akula 4-11, 11-9, 5-11, 6-11 in the mixed doubles final at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Malaysia ended their table tennis campaign with two silver medals.
Last week, the national women’s team, led by Ho Ying, won the silver after losing to Singapore 3-0 in the final.
Nonetheless, winning two silver in Birmingham is Malaysia’s best result in the Commonwealth Games since table tennis was included in Manchester in 2002.
The Singapore pair of Clarence Chew-Zeng Jian defeated Australia’s Nicholas Lum-Min Hyung Jee 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 14-12 for the mixed doubles bronze.
