Sea Games: Malaysian men play bridesmaid to Singapore again

Malaysia players celebrate winning silver in the men’s team table tennis final during the medal ceremony at the Morodok Table Tennis Hall, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: The Malaysian men’s table tennis team had a second shot at Singapore again, this time the final, after losing 3-0 in a group match.

But the result was no different, suffering a 3-0 loss at the Morodok Techo Stadium in Phnom Penh today.

The men settled for silver, and Malaysia, again, had to live in the shadow of their Causeway nemeses.

It was the same script at the last Sea Games where Malaysia finished second to Singapore in Hanoi.

Today, Malaysia’s No 1 Leong Chee Feng lost 11-8, 4-11, 9-11, 6-11 to Clarence Zhe. In the second tie, Choong Javen was outplayed 4-11, 11-9, 5-11, 8-11 to Koen Pang Yew En.

The final was over when Wong Qi Shen went down 9-11, 14-12, 13-11, 9-11, 7-11 to Izaac Quek.

Chee Feng said they played better in the final compared to their group match against Singapore, but it was still not enough.
