Health Benefits of Table Tennis: What Recent Research Says

Table tennis is more than a recreational sport. Recent research suggests that regular participation may support several aspects of physical, cognitive and social well-being, especially because the sport combines aerobic movement, rapid decision-making, hand-eye coordination and continuous changes in body position.

May Support Cognitive Function

Table tennis is an open-skill sport, meaning players must constantly react to an unpredictable opponent and ball trajectory.

This requires the brain to process:

  • Ball speed and spin
  • Direction changes
  • Opponent movement
  • Timing
  • Shot selection
  • Spatial awareness

A 2026 meta-analysis examining randomized controlled trials found that table tennis interventions were associated with improvements in cognitive performance. However, the researchers also noted considerable variation among the included studies, so the evidence should be interpreted cautiously rather than as proof that table tennis prevents dementia.

Improves Balance and Body Control

The same 2026 meta-analysis found that table tennis interventions significantly improved balance, with a pooled effect size of SMD 0.78. This is relevant because table tennis requires repeated weight transfer, lateral movement, trunk rotation and rapid changes of direction.

Trains Reaction Time and Neuromuscular Coordination

A 12-week study involving healthy adults aged 55–65 found significant improvements in reaction time and single-leg stance after table tennis training. Female participants also showed significant gains in hand-grip strength compared with controls.

These findings support the idea that table tennis can challenge both visual processing and muscular response at the same time.

Supports Physical Fitness

The same 12-week intervention study reported improvements in several measures of physical fitness. Participants were beginners, making the findings especially relevant to recreational players rather than only trained athletes.

May Support Healthy Ageing

Table tennis is increasingly being studied as a potentially useful activity for older adults because it combines:

  • physical movement
  • balance training
  • reaction
  • decision-making
  • social interaction

A 2026 rapid scoping review concluded that table tennis shows promising benefits across physical fitness, balance, agility, executive function, visual-perceptual ability, self-efficacy and psychosocial outcomes. However, the authors described the overall evidence base as promising rather than definitive.
